Coming Up Week 2

Week One has started successfully with students and staff enthusiastic about the term ahead. It was wonderful to meet as a community at our College Assembly to kick things off. Declan Levers (College Captain) cleverly used the analogy of an unsuccessful fishing trip to make a point about ‘Being the Change’. He prepared, he was patient, yet still only landed one small fish after hours of toil on a windy, wet day.

‘Being the Change’ doesn’t always immediately bring rewards or notoriety. Rather, it’s about showing up every day and trying your best no matter the result. This message resonated with the students, and I implore them to keep it mind, especially when things get tough. It was a reminder for students to be the best version of themselves, and step through the doors that ATC opens to help them succeed.

Sport

Rugby and Football season are upon us. Check out the app for a full run down of fixtures. I’m looking forward to attending the Rugby 1sts v St Peters (Mayer Oval Rield Indooroopilly) followed by the Football 1sts v BBC (Miskin Oval, Miskin St Toowong). It would be wonderful to see students from younger age groups there in support. Remember, if you play, you stay!

Parents and Friends

The next meeting will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday 23 April in the Mount Sion library. All parents and friends of ATC are welcome. Also check out the notices on the College App for regular updates on P & F meetings, events and more.

Parent, Teacher and Student Feedback Interviews

Monday 22 April is a pupil free day. Parent, teacher, and student feedback interviews will be conducted online via Teams from 8.30am through until 7.30pm. Schedules, Teams invites and instructions have been sent. Please check your inbox and junk folders. If you can’t find your invite, please contact the learning office (learning@atc.qld.edu.au).

ANZAC Day

The college will commemorate ANZAC day with liturgies on the morning of Wednesday 24 April. The college is closed on Thursday 25 April. Normal school resumes on Friday 26 April.

Parents and caregivers are advised that the ATC App will be undergoing scheduled maintenance on Monday 22 April from 5pm to 9pm, and you will not be able to access notices or information on the App during that time.

Mothers In May Celebration

An Evening With Nick Earls

As part of the ATC Literary Festival in Week 4, we invite dads, male caregivers and their sons to join us for A Night with Nick Earls’ - a twilight event on Thursday 9 May from 6pm-7pm on Westcourt Deck. Registration is only via Parent Lounge and tickets are $10 per person – which includes pizza and drinks - soft drinks, juice and water.  Parking is available in the Kate Street carpark. Big Bang Science

Such an enlightening day's work by our Year 6 students as they learned about renewable energy and electricity where electricity comes from and how it is produced. The science nerds from Big Bang presented the concept of an electrical circuit and how electricity comes from a power station to our homes. Our young scientists worked in small groups to complete the circuits and learn the concepts of simple circuits, switches, lights, motors, conductors and insulators. They also built a series of circuits using various alternative energy sources such as solar, wind and a hand crank. They investigated the positives and negatives of the different sources of power generation.

Digital Solutions

Designing and building an event booking App for Jazz by the River, our Year 12 Digital Solutions students have been given a challenging brief. Their App must provide greater ability for the client to track bookings and revenue. From the customer perspective, they must offer an one-stop-shop platform to manage all aspects of an event purchase including buying the tickets, ordering food at the event and modifying their bookings. The complex coding for a user-friendly app to ensure customer satisfaction certainly has Mr Lindner's students extending their Digi skills.

Year 4 Art

Blooming butterflies! Our Year 4 artists were excited to begin extending their Pete Cromer influenced Beautiful Butterflies into 3D Clay sculptures, focusing on the visual conventions of shape, pattern, colour and texture. The first lesson was skill building, teaching the boys to join clay with scoring and slip techniques to attach the body to the wings. We can't wait to see their finished masterpieces.

Year 8

Thank you to all the boys who shared their time during the holiday period to partner with Sense Rugby, running activities and creating a fun experience for participants.

Assistance continues to be required for each Tuesday afternoon at Kenmore State School main oval from 3.45 pm to 5.45 pm. Students will be required to work 1:1 with students, hold a tackle bag and assist with the setup and pack up of the session. This experience is an opportunity for students to develop a deeper understanding of neurodiversity and physical disabilities and the impacts this can have on a person’s engagement and access in many aspects of life. This will be linked with reflections and several learning experiences/activities throughout the year culminating with a term 4 HPE unit on Disability Rights and Inclusive Sports. We look forward to seeing our Year 8s assist with these sessions and thank Mary and Robyn from Sense Rugby for allowing us to be involved with these sessions. Students can register their attendance by completing a form on their Homeroom Teams page and further information will be sent to them. If your child can attend, please encourage them to register through the Homeroom Teams page.
