Coming Up Week 2

Welcome to Term 3. In my experience it’s the most momentous of the school year. We immerse ourselves in a jam-packed schedule of learning and activities whilst also beginning to plan next year. Now is the time for students and their families to reflect on their Semester 1 achievements, establish goals for Semester 2 and make decisions about 2025.

Next Monday’s (15 July) Parent/Teacher/Student Feedback Meetings are an excellent opportunity for shared goal setting, and to learn about your son’s Term 3 learning programs. All interviews are online and Teams Invitations will be sent to your calendar. Bookings are now closed. If you have any questions, check out the College app notices or contact learning@atc.qld.edu.au . It is a pupil free day.

On Tuesday I attended the first Parents and Friends meeting of the term. I encourage you to get involved in the numerous events the P&F has coming up. The Trivia Night on Friday 27 July promises to be a fun evening, and a chance to connect with ATC families. Details of the Trivia Night and future events can be found in the notices section of the app. The next P&F meeting, which also serves as the AGM, will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday 27 August. All parents and friends of ATC are welcome.

Subject Selections in secondary school are a focus for the Learning Office. The Year 8 and 9 2025 Information Night started proceedings last night. This is followed by the Year 10 and 11 2025 (remember to think which year your son will be in next year) on Tuesday 16 July. A Career Expo at 5pm will be followed by subject selection and pathways information at 6pm. Year 11 2025 students will receive further instruction about Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan meetings over the coming weeks. As always check the app.

This week we considered togetherness and connection during our whole school NAIDOC Mass. It was an opportunity for students and staff to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Home page | NAIDOC

Next Friday the first of our year group Masses will be held for Year 8 students. As a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice Tradition Mass and faith experiences guide our mission of achieving a liberating education for all.

Sport commences this Friday with Year 5 and 6 tennis and basketball trials. On Saturday rugby league trials take place. Throughout the term GBC football, AIC tennis and basketball (Y 5 and 6 only) and GBC basketball runs. Excitingly, ATC will host all seven rounds of rugby league on Jack Bowers Oval. We look forward to competitive fixtures played in the right spirit. A reminder about uniform to all students who attend matches as a supporter or player. The College expects students to be kitted out fully in formal uniform or sports uniform, not a combination of both or non-uniform items.

Business - Years 10 and 11

Congratulations to our wonderful ATC Year 10 and 11 Entrepreneurs who recently competed in the QUTBusiness School BlueShift Competition. These students chose to extend themselves and embrace our culture of learning at ATC by dedicating their own time working in small teams to develop real business solutions for a real business. They analysed the business challenge and prepared a written solution to a real business case. Bravo Gents!

FAITH AND MISSION

NAIDOC

On Tuesday, our College Community gathered together to celebrate the start of Semester 2 with our NAIDOC Mass. We were inspired to ‘Keep the Fire Burning’ in terms of our commitment to reconciliation, celebration, unity and togetherness. Students from Year 4 to 12 shared story, gifts and musical talent in bringing the liturgy to life. In the afternoon, a number of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students ran activities which taught traditional customs, beliefs and cuisines to our Year 4 cohort. Games and smiles lit up the Junior School, apart from a couple of students who just couldn’t quite tolerate the taste of the crocodile sausages!

FORMATION
Year 11 SociABLE

The Year 11 SociABLE will be held on Tuesday 13 August at Victoria Park Ballroom from 7pm - 10pm. Professional photographers will be on site from 6pm and will be taking photographs of individuals and their partners upon their arrival.

More information will follow in the coming weeks with ticketing opening in Term 3.

Winter House Gala

The Winter House Gala is an opportunity for the ATC community to come together to build stronger relationships and develop our House culture. Mother nature provided the perfect platform with the weather for all to compete positively across the many activities on offer on the last day of Term 2. There can be only one winner and Leinster brought home the bacon with a tight finish, having only 20 points separate first from fourth. Congratulations to Leinster House and to all the Staff who made the day possible.

SCHOOL PHOTOS

Our school photographer, Just Photography, is now accepting orders for school photos. Each family will be sent a unique link and code to access their individual student and class/homeroom photos. Once received, parents and/or caregivers will then be able to log on to the photographer’s website to view and order their photos.

SERVICE

In Year 5, students embrace environmental stewardship, making this service activity of transforming a rundown community garden the perfect project. In celebration of World Environment Day, over fifty ATC parents and students gathered at Vera St Community Garden in Toowong last term, continuing their rejuvenation efforts. This visit showcased progress from previous visits and Year 5 warmly welcomed new gardening enthusiasts from across other year levels. Students enjoyed hard yakka, discovering fascinating flora and fauna, and making new friends. It was a delightful way to warm up on a glorious winter morning. Stay tuned for future dates as we look forward to our next gathering growing even more when the weather warms up!

MUSIC

Australian International Music Festival

ATC had a large contingent of 59 co-curricular music students head off to Sydney for a fabulous week of workshops, collaborations and concerts where the highlight was performing at the Sydney Opera House. Thank you to our Director of Co-Curricular Music, Mr Jono Bolt and Ms Carla Sernia, our Co-Curricular Music Administrator and the team of staff for an outstanding week called off by the achievement of being awarded two gold medals by the festival adjudicators!

We are also blessed by the great support of all the music families including numerous sets of proud grandparents who enjoyed the tour concerts as well. Congratulations to all involved and especially to our musicians who represented the College with distinction.

SPORT

Welcome back to all ATC students, we're excited for another big term of sport and the introduction of Rugby League back to our program!

Training for all Term 3 sports are already well underway in Week 1, a reminder for all students to please either commit or communicate if you can't attend a training session. We have our first round of trial matches this Friday for Junior Tennis & Basketball and a full round of trial matches for Rugby League this Saturday. Please make sure you're subscribed to the relevant tags on the ATC App so you don't miss out on any communication for the season.

ATC High Achieving Athletes

This week the Courier Mail did a story on high-performing sportspeople and featured a number of our students. Ethan K (water polo) had an amazing international opportunity earlier in the year when he earned selection in the under-15 Pacer Invitational Water Polo event held in Singapore. At the event, his club team UQ Barras claimed the bronze medal after playing strong competition from Singapore, Thailand and Australia clubs. There were absolutely thrilling matches, and further added to Ethan’s development in and out of the pool. Year 9 Ambrose Treacy College swimmer, Tom S. made a splash at the Australian Age National Championships at the Gold Coast earlier this year. The young para swimmer placed in five races, finishing with three bronze, one silver and one gold medal. He and his coach Paul Jones were very happy with the performances and the youngster will continue to strive for PB performances this year. Watch for Sean R. in the future after the Year 12 student competed with distinction at the Open A team which won a gold medal at the Canoe Polo Nationals in Canberra. Aiden B. was one of the best players in the AIC First XVIII footy competition earlier in the season where his ball use off half back and precision was a revelation. He transferred that form into an outstanding season for Sherwood colts in the AFLQ club competition, and is helping the Magpies push for a premiership this season.Well done! Some outstanding athletes to watch in the future.

Patrick Herd and his company, Community Business Australia, facilitated the ATC strategic plan process.

Community Business Australia, a consulting business based in Bardon, is looking to recruit a new member for our small team.
