Coming Up Week 3

Tuesday’s cold and windy weather was a blessing in disguise as it led to our decision to host our annual Careers Expo for Year 10 students on the top level of the new Waterford North building. As we transition to the full use of the precinct in 2025 events like this are already revealing the flexible amenity it will create for students for decades to come.

Exhibitors from industry and higher education provided families excellent pathways information to help them develop options to carry them beyond the gates of ATC and into further education, training or work.

This was followed by subject selection advice and information about the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). Across the next couple weeks Senior Education and Training (SET plan) meetings are taking place between the learning office and families to align subject selections with pathway options. Thank you to Ms Liana Baillie, Ms Michelle Kath, Ms Angela Simpson and the Learning Office Team.

Week Three will be a celebration of Academic excellence. The Senior School Academic Assembly is on Tuesday morning, the Junior School Academic Assembly is on Wednesday morning and the Middle School Academic Assembly is on Friday morning. We look forward to hosting students and their families in the Nudgee Junior Hall for these events.

We are also celebrating students who exhibit our three Pillars of Learning, Leadership and Service at our Signum Fidei (Sign of Faith) breakfast on Wednesday at 7.30am riverside behind the Edmund Rice building. Invites have been sent out, bring a warm jumper!

I also wish Junior School students in the ATC/Brigidine Maths challenge all the best. What a wonderful opportunity to combine learning and socialization with one of our sister schools.

We also look forward to our Music and Drama Recital evening on Thursday at 5pm.

Lastly, good luck to all our sportsman who commence their seasons in earnest this Saturday. May you play to your strengths, and in good spirit

Careers Expo

Our Year 10 students and caregivers learned much about potential post-school pathways on a very cold Tuesday night. Fortunately, we were the first group to hold an event in the new Waterford building and were very comfortable in a lovely warm space! Students were able to ask questions at all the University stalls and a large variety of industry representatives. A great start to their Senior School journey!

Geography

Last week Year 7 Campbell, Bodkin and Lynch Geography classes went on their first excursion of Semester 2! Our excursion this term involved students travelling from ATC to Cormorant Bay at Wivenhoe Dam to carry out a water health investigation. A great day outdoors and some important study on how to test for the health of the source of our drinking water, as well as the ways that we can ensure we use our water wisely were covered on this day!As Geography is very much an evidence-based subject – carrying out actual water tests using physical (temperature, turbidity) and chemical tests (pH, Phosphates, Dissolved Oxygen) on the water at Wivenhoe painted a picture of the different ways to think about water quality. The good news is – our Dam is Healthy! The students also ventured to the Wivenhoe Dam spillway where a constant flow of water from the Dam helps ensure the healthy flow of the Brisbane River.A final treat of the day was to see a practical demonstration of the water treatment processes that ensures clean drinking water is delivered to our homes. What a great experience for the boys and a terrific day out! A big thank you to the staff for their time and to the boys for their active involvement and great behaviour on the day.

FAITH AND MISSION

Year 8 Mass

The Year 8 cohort gathered together for their annual Mass to be reminded about the importance of genuine relationships in order to be the change that the world needs. We all must strive to create connections of Faith, Hope and Love. This Mass saw one of largest choirs of the year in the Chapel of St Joseph which created a wonderful sense of sound and energy.

SERVICE

Mentors

We have many opportunities for our older students to mentor and engage with our younger students at ATC. It is always heartwarming to see and our young students look up to their ‘big brothers’. Last term there were a number of Year 12 students helping in Cooking Club. They definately knew their way around the kitchen and were eager to share their skills.

CLUB NEWS

Welcome back to Term 3! I trust everyone had a nice break and are ready and enthusiastic for a big Term 3. Please make sure to check the Term 3 Clubs Timetable for when your respective club/s will commence. This can be found on the app under the Clubs tag.  We ask students to please arrive on time for their relevant club session.

A big congratulations to our Robotics students who competed in the RoboRave Competition over the weekend. We are very proud of how these boys performed and represented the college to the larger robotics community. Well done boys!

Robotics

Students from the Robotics Club traveled up to the University of the Sunshine Coast on the holidays for the 5th RoboRAVE International Tournament. There were five ATC teams who competed, Lago Mindstroms, Alphabots, Alt Tabz, The Cody Mates, Low Batteries, and the Biggest Birds. Students competed in the line following challenge, where they had to get their robot to autonomously travel following a line that had intersections and dead ends to avoid. Once at the other end of the map, they had to deliver cargo to the top of a tower and then return along the route they had taken. The Biggest Birds was ATCs first attempt at the mouse labyrinth challenge which involved the robot navigating through a maze, collecting a block of cheese, and returning with the cheese. The boys worked hard all day on these previously unseen maps with the Biggest Birds coming third in the final. The event judges and volunteers commended the effort and attitudes of our students. There were Queensland teams from as far away as Townsville and a score of international teams from Mexico, China ,Taiwan, Finland, Egypt and more. The students also got to see many student-built and professional robots with a few our students allowed to drive some of these. Overall, the day was a success and the boys are keen to modify their designs and look forward to competing again next year.

SPORT NEWS

Week 2 brings the first official round of sport for our Rugby League, Tennis, Basketball and Football (Soccer) teams. The commitment to training and the attitude of the boys so far has been fantastic and we want to continue down this positive trajectory.

The schedules and squad lists for all matches this Saturday are live on the ATC App, for any questions please contact the Coordinator of the sport. Good luck to all our teams on the weekend.

Rugby League

Our Year 7 Rugby League team had their first trial match and for a lot of players, their very first Rugby League match last Saturday vs. a strong Villanova side. It was a great experience for the team with plenty of positives to take away from the match. Best of luck for their game this morning.

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT

Hockey

Xavier had the honour of captaining the U13 - 15 Metwest Boys Hockey team at the QRSS Hockey Championships in Rockhampton in May. Metwest had a successful few days finishing 4th in Queensland. Xavier was awarded Player of the Championship and secured a place in the QRSS U13 - 15 Boys Hockey team competing in July against the other States. Well done!

Waterpolo

Ethan recently competed with the Qld U17 team in Canberra at the Interstate Challenge. It was a very steep competition curve and the boys showed remarkable resilience fighting for every single point. He had a great experience at the Australian Institute of Sport.

Basketball

Well done to brothers, Matt and Ethan who are shooting goals!
Matt won the MVP (Most Valuable Player) for the Queensland State League (QSL) Men’s Youth League Div 1. He received the award at the recent NBL1 and QSL awards night. This award was voted by the Coaches and Captains from all the teams in the competition.
Ethan was the captain of the team U14 Logan Thunder Div 1 Basketball team that won the gold medal for the SQJBC competition. His team then followed that up with a top 4 finish at the Qld State Championships held in Cairns in June. This means the team will head to Melbourne in September to compete in the Australian Club Championships.

Rugby League

Over the holidays, Buddy played in the under 11s rugby league state championship (Vic Jensen Cup) held in the very cold Stanthorpe! Met West was undefeated and won the whole carnival. Buddy played well and received the player of the match in the final against Northern.
