Coming Up Week 5

Literary Festival

Week 4 marked ATC's annual week-long literary festival, a dynamic celebration of words and creativity spanning all grades. It kicked off with Tuesday's assembly featuring playwright David Burton and cartoonist Simon Deshon, captivating students with their blend of storytelling and visual artistry. On Wednesday, First Nations authors Auntie Rhonda and Trevor Fourmile shared indigenous perspectives, deepening cultural understanding for our boys. Thursday featured talented Fantasy writer Zachary Ashford and Slam poet, Anisa Nanduala, who inspired our young writers to explore diverse expressions. The festival concluded with animator Lachlan Creagh and short story writer Edwina Shaw, enriching students' literary journeys with imaginative worlds and profound insights.

One of the highlights of the week was our father/son evening 'A Night with Nick Earls,' drawing over 90 attendees to delve into the craft of writing. Earls' anecdotes and charm illuminated the creative process, sparking discussions and fostering a love for storytelling among seasoned readers and aspiring writers alike. His involvement in our Literary Festival underscores our mission to ignite imaginations and celebrate the power of narrative, leaving a lasting impact on all who attended.

Empower Week

Mental illness is a major concern in Australia with 43% of people aged 16-85 experiencing some form of mental disorder at some stage in their life. Empower Week this semester turns our focus to Well-being, with the intention of Building Our Emotional Muscle by taking our brains to the gym every day. Afterall, we can’t expect to go to the gym once and be able to run a marathon and this is the same for our brains – it needs to be a consistent routine to regulate our brains and bodies to prevent us from reaching crisis point.

Empower Week will be an opportunity for the ATC community to come together to normalise conversations about mental health, but to engage staff and students through practical tools and exercises that we can be doing as a daily practice to ensure we maintain our emotional homeostasis. Our Formation and Counselling Teams will be on hand to lead events over the week including guided meditation, student panels, pop-up band performances and a social afternoon with Brigidine on Friday for our Year 8 students.

During the week, our focus will also extend to our Staff who work so well in partnership with our families to support our students. Through education, engagement and awareness, we can build a sustainable mentally healthy ATC community.

Japanese

Year 9 Japanese students experienced a culinary adventure to Haruka Izakaya in Graceville to round off their food unit. The venue provided the perfect backdrop for a Japanese dining experience with the highlight of the meal being traditional Obento lunch, accompanied by miso soup, tempura, thinly sliced cabbage salad with goma (sesame) dressing, steamed rice, and edamame. However, the standout favourite was undoubtedly the karaage (fried chicken)! Some adventurous souls even dared to order sashimi, showcasing their willingness to explore new flavours. It's moments like these that foster a deeper appreciation for Japanese culture and cuisine among our students. A special thank you to our Year 9 Japanese teacher, Tanya Oghanna, for organising a wonderful and enriching experience.

Year 4 HPE

Healthy, active, mindful and friendly little Year 4s are deepening their knowledge of The Five Dimensions of Health in their HPE unit this term. Artist Bio:

Cynthia Copley is a contemporary landscape artist from Ipswich/Jagera Yuggera Land, whose visual language is an expressive interpretation of her interactions and connection with the natural world.

Cynthia captures her direct response to the environment through plein air painting studies; these first interactions then become the foundations for landscapes remembered and re-imagined in expressionist oil paintings created in her home studio. A painter who deeply observes her surroundings, capturing the intricate patterns, the entangled beauty and the shifting light.

Notably, in 2021 Cynthia was awarded the inaugural Mervyn Moriarty Landscape Prize through the Queensland Regional Art Awards.
