Coming Up Week 6

Week 6 at ATC has always been "Camp Week." The challenge of being away on camp can be exciting and confronting. I encourage families to have conversations with their sons over the weekend to assure them the teachers will support them while they are away on camp. Normal school rules and expectations apply on camp, and so does the level of care and support provided by the staff.

Camp Buses Departure

Both the internal drop off zones will be allocated to buses on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for camp departures. On these days, there will be no access to either drop off zone between 7.30am and 9.00am. Please use either of the College carparks for drop off on these days. Students have been informed of the departure meeting point for the respective year level/camp group.

Camp Buses Return

On Friday afternoon, the internal pick up zones will be closed to traffic between 2. 00pm and 4.30pm to allow for campers to disembark from buses safely. Please use the College carparks when waiting for your son to arrive back from camp. I ask for patience with drop off and pick up during next week, and please follow directions from ATC Staff who will be directing traffic on campus. Please inform your son of alternative plans for pick up during Camp Week.

School Buses

The School Bus services with Brisbane Bus Lines and Southern Cross will be operating as normal during Camp Week Monday 1 March to Friday 5 March. Please be aware that if your son’s camp bus arrives back to school after the normal school bus departure time, you will need to have alternate pick up arrangements in place. Parents are reminded to download the TransportMe app to their smart device and follow your sons’ bus whilst enroute. When you open the App you will see Bus numbers listed if they are travelling on the road at that point in time. You can follow the bus progress on the live maps.

Equipment Lists

Please see the College App and your emails to download the Year Level Camp Equipment lists and Year Level Camp letters for full details of departure times and return bus times and what items are required on camp (and items that are NOT allowed on camp) All Camp Letters are on the College App under your son’s year level.

Tuckshops

Both Paddy’s Place and Bakehouse will be open every day for morning tea and lunch during Camp Week; however, as many students will be away, there will be a reduced menu for the week. Breakfast will not be available all week due to the cancellation of most morning sport and music activities.

Year 11 PARTY Program

Year 11 Students will participate in a compulsory on-site event - P.A.R.T.Y Program, on Tuesday 14 March. What is P.A.R.T.Y.?... it is an acronym for Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth.

What is the purpose of the Program? The purpose of the program is to give students a real-life experience of possible consequences of risk related behaviour, and hopefully reduce the number of young people involved in trauma. Alcohol is a large contributing factor to trauma in this vulnerable age group and the program aims to reduce the incidence of alcohol related injuries in teenagers and youth. The program was originally developed in Ontario, Canada in 1986. It now runs in over 100 sites worldwide. The program is an initiative of Qld Health and we are excited that our Year 11 Students will be participating in the program throughout the morning.

FAITH & MISSION

Service

All students are invited to take part in the The Lenten Project as a way to practically live out the ritual of Lent. In order to complete the project and receive 2 Service Hours, students are asked to:

  • bring package-free, plastic-free, recyclable school lunches. This sacrifice of convenience is also a charitable donation to the environment that ATC so proudly advocates for.
  • In addition, students are also asked to perform a daily prayer/reflection/meditation for the duration of Lent. This daily prayer can be in the form of traditional prayer such as meal-time prayer or leading their class in a morning prayer. However, it may also come in the form of a moment before bedtime to reflect on their day and give thanks. It may also include a few minutes of meditation and/or mindfulness activities.

These daily practices reflect the traditional elements of Lent; Fasting, Almsgiving and Prayer. By committing to this project students Fast from convenience, Give to our environment and engage with meaningful prayer and reflection that promotes personal growth and an awareness of others. Students are welcome to commence immediately however in order to prepare adequately, they may commence on Monday 27 February, and the project will conclude Thursday 6 April. As always, we love sharing what our students get up to in the area of Service! So please send through any photos or stories of your sons participating in this very practical Lenten Project to signumfidei@atc.qld.edu.au

LEARNING

Maths

During Tuesday’s lesson, students in year 5 extension maths engaged collaboratively in pairs to creatively solve unfamiliar problems working within given parameters. They demonstrated their mathematical understanding by using logical thinking and reasoning skills while also communicating their team process to explain solutions. The best part of the lesson? Students continually persist and work through challenges, negotiating with their partner and proving their results in different ways.

Year 4 Excursion

On Thursday 2 March, all students from Year 4 will be going on an excursion to Ngutana-Lui, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Studies Centre at Inala.  On this day, students will be immersed in the richness and diversity of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. They will also complete a number of activities including painting, dance and boomerang throwing. Please visit the College app for information letter from Mr Pickering.

SPORT

Due to Camp Week next week (Week 6), there will be no ATC run sport including AFL, Volleyball, Cricket, Rugby & Football (Soccer) training from Monday 27 Feb to Friday 3 March. The Swimming Program will still be in full operation. For those boys not on Camp, please continue to attend your relevant Athletic Development session/s (sport specific and/or Gym Club). Games will still take place on Saturday 4 March and we would love for all boys to be available for these fixtures please.

Volleyball

Our Volleyball Program has come a long way, from training on the basketball courts and a dream to be competitive in the GBC to now being extremely competitive, not only at a State level but also on the National stage. This is a testament to years of hard work and dedication by ATC staff and students, and now the Old Boys who are returning as coaches and giving back to the program that gave so much to them. It was only fitting that we held an OLD BOYS vs FIRSTS Match last weekend! Old Boys strapped up their knees, spent 15 minutes warming up and took to the court to show the current Firsts what ATC Volleyball is all about. It was a hard-fought five set match, spurred on by a tremendous amount of support from the rowdy spectators which ended in a tight two-point victory to the Old Boys. Hopefully this tradition continues on for many years to come, bringing the best of the current generation of players and the proud veterans together for a clash of the ages.

CLUBS

Thank you to all our keen ATC Club participants who have enjoyed the first 3 weeks of the popular ATC Club program.  With nearly 500 students registered in our clubs, it has been great to see the enthusiasm and enjoyment across the program.  A reminder to subscribe to your relevant club on the app under the Cocurricular, Clubs and Activities tag for any updates that may be posted. Please remember there will be no clubs next week during Camp Week. We look forward to all clubs resuming in week 7.

CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC and DRAMA & COMMUNICATION

Please make note that no timetabled lessons or rehearsals will take place during Week 6. Students may be contacted individually by their tutor to arrange make-up lessons where possible.
