Coming Up Week 6

Empower Week

Thank you to everyone who made Empower Week a great success. Students and staff have ‘built emotional muscle’ through assemblies and discussion panels focused on mental well-being. Activities such as meditation, the push up challenge, pop up band performances and social events with Brigidine College have also raised awareness and built community. In my assembly address I stressed the importance of being a voice for others around mental well-being. I encourage all students and staff to use their agency to build a sustainable and mentally healthy community.

Inclusive Practice Community Breakfast

Yesterday morning I attended a breakfast to connect our Inclusive Practices staff with families. I was moved by the story of past parent, Fintan Keogh who spoke about the educational journey of his son Fearghus. He detailed the challenges Fearghus faced on his journey, and how always prioritizing his educational needs ultimately proved successful. It reinforced the purpose of our mission to provide a liberating educational experience within an inclusive community.

Mother’s Celebration - 'Mothers in May'

ATC mothers enjoyed a beautiful twilight Mother’s celebration by the river on Wednesday. College principal Mr Ryan expressed gratitude for the contribution mothers make to the ATC community, describing them as the ‘engine room’ that propels students towards their goals. Certificate II Hospitality students helped with the preparation and serving of tasty canapes. A few industrious Dads did a great job keeping the bar running. Thank you to the businesses and families who donated raffle prizes, our catering and facilities and services teams behind the scene and our organizing committee led by Rhonnie Sparksman and Lou Johnston.

Da Vinci Decathlon

ATC teams will compete in the state final of the Da Vinci Decathlon at Nudgee College next week. The Da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition where students compete in challenges across 10 disciplines - engineering, mathematics, code breaking, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography, legacy, art and poetry. We wish them all the best and know they’ll have an exciting time challenging themselves.

Parents and Friends Meeting

The next meeting will be held at 6.30pm on Tuesday 21 May in the Mount Sion library. All parents and friends of ATC are welcome. Also check out the notices on the College App for regular updates on P&F meetings, events and more.

PHOTO ORDERS

This year, the college has engaged a new photographer, Just Photography. Just Photography uses a post-paid school photo ordering system, which allows families to view all photos prior to purchasing.

Photo orders will open approximately 4 weeks after photo day. Each family will be sent a unique student picture code. Once received, parents and/or caregivers will then be able to log on to photographer’s website using this unique picture code, to view and order their son’s photos. More details will be sent at a later stage.

SIBLING PHOTOS
We have allocated time on the day for sibling photographs to be taken at approximately 12:30pm, just before 2nd break. If you wish for your sons to be included, please register your interest below via the online form for a SIBLING PHOTO.

The web shop will be open approximately 4 weeks after photo day. Once open, the College will email each family with a unique student picture code. Once received, parents and/or caregivers will then be able to log on to Just Photography’s website using this unique picture code, to view their son’s photos.

Once the web shop is open, there is a 2-week window where orders can be placed and delivered to school. After this date, any photo orders will be posted to customers directly, incurring a postage and handling fee of $9.95.

Please email Just Photography with any questions.

Geography

Year 8 Geography classes ventured out of the classroom and into our physical environment on an excursion to Point Danger and Palm Beach on the Gold Coast. Learners investigated the causes of coastal erosion and the different management strategies that have been implemented to minimise the loss of sand from Palm Beach. It was a perfect Autumn day to undertake outdoor study on how development on the foredunes has caused increased erosion creating many social and economic issues. As Geography is very much an evidence-based subject, students conducted a number of experiments determining the direction of longshore drift and wave type and also created some very detailed field sketches identifying erosion strategies utilised at Point Danger and Palm Beach. What a great experience for the boys and a terrific day out!

Some great events coming up to bring us to the end of the Term – continue to check the College App for all performance and lesson information and we look forward to catching up with families at some of these great upcoming performances!

Music Workshop

Last week, the St Aidan's Music Department welcomed ATC musicians for a combined Music Workshop. Musicians from both schools shared knowledge and learnt new material through workshops and rehearsals providing opportunities for musos to enhance their skills in large ensembles. The evening culminated in a concert showcase. Students across both schools enjoyed performing together and establishing connections. It is lovely to see friendships transcend across schools through shared experiences and musical interests. A huge thank you to the St Aidan's Music Department for their generosity and hospitality. We look forward to more collaborative experiences for our young musicians.

Barnes Cleary Family, Sophie Reardon Make Up Artist, Twisted Desire Hair Corinda, Bunnings, Kmart, My Green Stuff Graceville, Inna Bliss Yoga Studios, Corinda Hardware, KPR Automotive, Sleepoverzzz, Snooze Jindalee and artist Cynthia Copley has donated her painting for the Dash For Crash Raffle. Valued at $750 this is sure to be a sought-after prize.

Artist Bio: Cynthia Copley is a contemporary landscape artist from Ipswich/Jagera Yuggera Land, whose visual language is an expressive interpretation of her interactions and connection with the natural world.

Cynthia captures her direct response to the environment through plein air painting studies; these first interactions then become the foundations for landscapes remembered and re-imagined in expressionist oil paintings created in her home studio. A painter who deeply observes her surroundings, capturing the intricate patterns, the entangled beauty and the shifting light. Notably, in 2021 Cynthia was awarded the inaugural Mervyn Moriarty Landscape Prize through the Queensland Regional Art Awards.

Equine

A group of our Year 9 students volunteered at White Rock Peak to support the Reason to Thrive program, which offers Equine Assisted Learning life-skills programs to at-risk young people and women affected by trauma. They dedicated their time to clean-up the yard, ensuring a safe environment for the horses. After their hard work, the boys enjoyed a lovely morning tea, followed by some time feeding and patting the horses. We're proud of our student's commitment to helping others and supporting this wonderful program. They can't wait for their next visit!
Thank you to Reason to Thrive for this meaningful opportunity!
