CAMP - LAST MINUTE MESSAGES

Camp and Covid

As everyone is aware, COVID is quite present throughout the wider community. Our community co-operation in preparing for and during camp is appreciated. From a common good perspective, it is important that families are conservative with regards to COVID in the household before camp. Queensland Health guidelines recommend 5 days of isolation and being symptomless before returning to activities if one has tested positive. If there is COVID present in the household, it would be appropriate for our students to be tested before attending camp whether they have symptoms or not. If your son is sick, it would be expected that they do not attend camp please. If a student presents with symptoms on camp, wherever possible, they will be isolated and possibly tested. Wherever practicable, a COVID positive student may need to be collected by parents from the camp. Please contact the College should you require assistance. Your support and understanding is appreciated.

Camp week road closure/restricted access

Please be aware that that the internal roads will be closed to traffic on Tuesday 27 February between 7.30am and 9.00am, and Friday 1 March between 2.00pm & 3.15pm for camp bus access. Please follow the direction of our staff who will be on duty to ensure the safety of students. Duhig Drive will be closed from the Twigg Street entrance. The Bridge Street drop off area and carpark will be accessible although avoiding its use is advised. You will experience delays. If you need to enter the campus do so via Kate Street and note that you will be asked to continue or be diverted to the Main carpark and Brothers Oval overflow carpark. There is no standing in the Duhig Drive drop off area as it will be cordoned off for buses. We ask for your patience during this time and consideration for our neighbours if parking in surrounding streets.

FORMATION NEWS

Seniors came together this week for a collaborative workshop to Build a Culture of Learning amongst their peers and across the College. The College Captains pitched the vision and House Leaders led the workshops to collate thoughts, observations and suggestions of how they may lead an enhanced learning culture at ATC. This student-led initiative is driven by the College’s Strategic Plan and the Seniors’ intent to Be The Change in 2024. It was great to see the Seniors show up and represent today with the robust conversations presenting no excuses for anyone to hide behind, and a clear challenge to work collaboratively in their collective academic pursuits.

LEARNING NEWS

Parenting Strategies for Teenage Success

In recognition of the importance and necessary study skills required in senior schooling, the College invites Year 11 and 12 Parents and Caregivers to attend Parenting Strategies for Teenage Success workshop on Thursday 7 March, 6pm to 7.15pm in NJ Hall being presented by parenting and study skills expert, Darren Pereira. Darren will speak to parents about how to support your child in becoming well organised, develop positive study habits, and communicate effectively. Please note this evening is strictly for parents and has been designed to complement the students’ presentation which will occur the following day at school. Parents are required to bring a pen with them to this workshop. The student-teacher-parent partnership is critical to enhancing resilience and wellbeing, to raise academic achievement. When teachers and parents use the same common language and reinforce the same key messages, students are better able to develop critical study and organisational skills. Please register your attendance for Parenting Strategies for Teenage Success via the online form link HERE. Registrations will close on Tuesday 5 March at 12pm.

Year 11 Economics

On Thursday 29 February and Friday 1 March, from 8.15am to 3.00pm each day, a selected small group
of Year 11 Accounting and Economics students will be partaking in the ECOMAN Program as part
of our commitment to curriculum engagement and academic extension. These students and their parents have been emailed and full details are in Parent Lounge. Students are to wear their Formal Uniform with Suitcoat and College Tie. Parents of those attending can find full details of the excursion in their Parent Lounge Account along with a letter from Ms Bitossi

Year 4 Excursion

On Thursday 29 February all boys from Year 4 will be visiting the Ngutana-Lui Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Studies Centre at Inala. On this day, the boys will be immersed in the richness and diversity of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. They will also complete a number of activities including painting, dance and boomerang throwing. Student need to bring a small backpack, Sunscreen, Water Bottle, Morning Tea and lunch (no nut products) and wear school Hat, PE Uniform (House Shirt allowed). The excursion will take place during school hours and we are leaving by bus at approximately 9.30am and returning by 2.30pm . As the boys will spend much of the day outside, we are asking that they wear their PE uniform. Boys will be completing activities in house groups so they can wear their house shirts if they have one.

FROM THE CLASSROOM

Building and Construction

Year 9 Building and Construction students have spent the start of Term 1 completing their safety training and are now moving on to practice their joint construction with a series of challenges learning three different joints. When competent, they will apply these new skills to their project, a beehive construction. All the students are very keen and it's wonderful to see them engaged in this hands-on subject.

Physics

Witness the power of energy conservation in action! Our Year 11 Physics demonstration of the first law of thermodynamics was nothing short of explosive. To demonstrate energy conservation, boiling paraffin wax rapidly released thermal energy upon freezing, culminating in a spectacular fireball ignition. Ms Mayer said, "Science truly ignites curiosity!"

Music

In Music, Year 6 are exploring mixed metre and songs in a minor tonality (think Eye of the Tiger, Hey Ya! by OutKast and Coldplay’s The Scientist). They are also enjoying practicing their performance skills and demonstrating all nine things that are key to a fantastic performance by finding out “Who has the Gold?!”

Year 7 Mass

The Year 7 cohort gathered together for their annual Mass this morning. While being challenged to continue to find avenues to ‘Be the Change’, the boys also heard from the John’s Gospel and St Paul’s letter to the Ephesians regarding our calling to be people of humility and integrity. It was wonderful to gather as a Catholic Community in Lent and join in the signing of hymns while celebrating ancient rituals and learning more for upcoming assessment.
