Coming Up Week 7

It has been another active week with many noteworthy events prior to the final fortnight of assessment laden tasks. This week also marks, bar one Japanese exam, the completion for most Seniors of their external exams. Next week, we eagerly look forward to celebrating with the Year 12s and their families the wonderful milestone of completing their schooling.

Summer Music Concert

Families shared a BBQ dinner before the Summer Music Concert began and were entertained by our Clarinet and Flute ensembles. Our Junior Guitars opened proceedings in the NJ Hall with an entertaining set of rock classics, before our Concert Band and Junior Bands shared their talents and demonstrated their outstanding progress across the year. Our Percussion Ensemble B and C featured our very talented percussion students and were very popular as always. The evening concluded with an exciting performance that combined the ATC Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble with a very fitting end to the year for those ensembles. Congratulations students on an outstanding evening of music making! This concludes our music concert program for the year, and we eagerly look forward to the entertainment at next week’s Celebration of Excellence.

Clontarf Awards evening

It was a pleasure to attend the Clontarf Foundation Awards evening this week. The partnership between Clontarf Foundation and ATC is providing excellent support to our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families. The sense of community was very strong, and the gratitude naturally spoken about by all of the award winners was exceptional. Congratulations to Mr Josh Hoffman and, in his absence, Mr Cam Pickering for their leadership and organisation in celebrating the achievements of the Clontarf students. I add my congratulations to the young people who were acknowledged across the three schools of the College for Top Attender, and Academic awards, along with Brock Compton who was awarded the Warrior of the Year, and Lachlan Rawson for achieving the Clontarf Spirit award.

Remembrance Day Liturgies

Whilst the country will pause tomorrow to acknowledge Remembrance Day, we took the opportunity today to pay our respects as a community. Warril Place provided the special setting by the river as the students and staff came together in two different liturgies. I continue to be impressed how well the students understand the significance of such occasions and their respect they exhibit. In these times of war across our world, it is important we acknowledge the sacrifices of past and current service people. Our prays for peace will continue for our troubled world.

Celebration Of Excellence Tuesday 14 November

This is our formal celebration of the achievements of 2023. All families are invited to join us at Riverlife next Tuesday 14 November, as we reflect on the year we have had. The students who are receiving an award at this year’s Celebration of Excellence have had an email sent to their parents and caregivers from Mrs Tammy Sleeth. Please check your emails and note that rehearsals will be held on Monday 13 November in the Nudgee Junior Hall. During rehearsals, students will be informed of their specific award. Award recipients will be required to wear their full formal uniform at both the rehearsals on Monday 13 November and the Celebration of Excellence on Tuesday 14 November.

Exam Period

The focus this week has been very much on completing units of work and final assignment tasks. Next Friday the exam period begins for all year levels. Please ensure your son has checked his exam schedule that have been published. To best prepare, knowing what day, time, and location each exam is, will ensure a calm approach to each exam. Being organised with equipment and exam details will help produce best outcomes.

2024 Subjects

An email has been sent to students and families in the current Years 7 to 10 to remind all of the subjects that have been allocated for 2024. This is to assist families with the purchasing of stationary for next year.

2024 Homerooms

Staff are currently working on the allocation of homerooms for years 4 to 10 for 2024. Many factors will be taken into account, including student relationships, academic results, balance across the groups. Whilst we value the partnership with families at ATC, I ask that you respect our decisions as educators. I assure you we will take in all factors, and a large team of staff will determine the best allocation across the homerooms.

ATC Parents and Friends

Please join us for the 2024 Planning Meeting on Tuesday 21 November in Mt Sion Library (Junior School precinct) at 6.30pm. We will begin planning the 7 key community events that the P&F coordinate and speak about volunteer participation at other events and sport canteen. Please come along to hear about what the P&F does at the College and possibly lend a hand at one of these events. All Year Level Parent Liaisons are requested to join me at this meeting. We are also looking for a Year 4 parent to take on the role of Parent Liaison in 2024. Please email the Secretary, Catherine Jackson if you have a son already at ATC and a younger child starting in Year 4 2024. We need your expertise to help guide new parents to the College.

COLLEGE 1:1 LAPTOP PROGRAM

As part of the College 1:1 Laptop Program, each student has given a College laptop at the beginning of the year. During the last week of the school year, every student will be required to hand in their laptop. This will allow a full audit to be completed and general maintenance to occur. Students in Years 4, 7 and 10 in 2024 will receive a new College issued laptop. All other students will receive their current laptop on day one of the new school year.

The Year 12 cohort will be on a different timeline and process. Students will need to hand in their laptop and charger to the IT Department by 11am on Thursday 16 November. It is important that Year 12 students back up any files on their laptop that they wish to keep to a USB or external hard drive. After auditing the current laptops and the needs for 2024, a decision has been made to offer the 2023 Seniors the opportunity to purchase their College laptops. After consultation with our IT partners, ATC has been offered $125 for each of the devices. If a family wishes to purchase the College laptop, they will need to pay the market rate of $125 via Parent Lounge, under Events and Payments. Purchase of the laptop must be completed by COB Friday 17 November 2023 and will be returned in the same physical condition as they were handed in. The laptop can also be repaired but will incur an additional charge per the Acceptable Technology Use Policy (Students). Laptops will be available for collection from the IT Office from Monday 4 December 2023 after the laptop has been wiped and come with the default Windows 10 setup as if you purchased it from a retail store.

Please read on for more upcoming events to ensure you are up to date.

Procedures around students leaving early

Please be reminded that students are not to contact their parents or carers directly if they are feeling unwell or need to leave the College early. Students are FIRST to report to Student Reception, where staff will contact parents/ carers on the student’s behalf. If you are aware that your child will need to leave the College early, please log this via the College App, providing as much notice as possible.

Safety and Bikes & Electric Scooters

After several reports from parents and members of our local community, we believe it is important to address some safety concerns for our students. All students who ride bikes and electric scooters to school, must exit the campus at a safe speed. Several parents have reported witnessing daily collisions both from the pedestrian pathway and the roadway between students on bicycles and e-scooters. It is important to note our Queensland Law and Road Safety Rules. Correspondence was sent earlier in the year which is as follows:

Riding – students should observe Queensland Law and Road Safety Rules. This includes wearing a secured helmet when riding. Please also note that e-scooters are illegal for people under the age of 12, and that users between the ages of 12-16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Due to the substantial number of hospitalisations recorded because of accidents on e-scooters, it is the College’s preference that students do not ride e-scooters to and from school. Any student riding their bike should ensure it is locked in the cage at the pool.

Crossing the Road

We understand parking around the school is at a premium during pick-up times, but we are experiencing a significant increase in our Senior Students crossing the road at the top of SFXC. Whilst it is not illegal to cross the road at this location, and often convenient, it is not safe. There have been several close calls, and we ask for parent support in collecting their sons from the designated collection locations on campus. Our internal road is a wonderful facility that is easy for entry and exit while ensuring the safety of students and drivers. Please continue to support our efforts for student safety and for our teachers who supervise our students each afternoon.

FAITH & MISSION

Christmas Carnival

The last day of school, Friday November 24, will be the Christmas Carnival. On this day, the students have an opportunity to participate and help at a stall/activity with other students in their class to raise money for charity as part of our Christmas Charity efforts. Each class is organising an activity for the morning. As part of that organization, we need some small donations to hand out as prizes.  We encourage all students to bring up to a maximum of $20, made up of some small change, to participate in the many fun and engaging activities that will be organised by all classes. Students are to wear PE uniform. Food and drinks will be for sale on the

We encourage all students to bring up to a maximum of $20, made up of some small change, to participate in the many fun and engaging activities that will be organised by the homerooms across the college. Food and drinks will be for sale on the day. If you have any questions about this initiative, please do not hesitate to contact your son's Homeroom teacher. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Year 12 Retreat and Reflection Day

Please see the letter from Matt Warr, Dean of Faith and Mission, outlining the details and importance of the day.  If you have any questions, please contact the Faith and Mission Office.

Year 6 Transition Retreat

The purpose of the Retreat on Wednesday 22 November is to provide a reflective opportunity for the students at this significant time of transition from Junior to Middle School. There will be three key components to the day: storytelling and sharing, affirmation and appreciation and preparation. Students are asked to print out and bring with them on the day a collection of 5 photos that represent different stages of their life. These can be photos prior to Year 4 and/or Year 4 to Year 6. During the day, they will reflect and share stories on their Junior School journey. It will be a day which engages students in looking back and in preparing for the new journey ahead. Students are to bring 5 photos (to be printed on paper separately) and their morning tea, and should wear their ATC Day Uniform.

RSVP required: Year 4 Celebration Breakfast & Liturgy

We invite families to our End of Year 4 Celebration Liturgy on Thursday 23 November commencing at 8:45am. This is a great opportunity for the Year 4 community (students and families) to come together to reflect on a wonderful first year at Ambrose Treacy College. It is important that you RSVP for this event by Thursday 16 November. Preceding the celebration, students and their families are invited to gather for a light breakfast at the back of NJ Hall from 8:00am. To assist with arrangements for the morning, families are requested to accept the invitation in Parent Lounge by Friday 17 November. Please select an option for the number of family members attending, excluding your son in Year 4. Should you have any dietary requirements, please contact Helen Hicks, PA to the Dean of Faith and Mission via email. Year 4 student dietary requirements have been noted already. To assist with parking on this occasion, please adhere to the directions of the grounds staff to park on Brothers oval only. With the Year 4 Regatta later that day, boys will wear their PE Uniform on this day.

Congratulations to all of the students and many thanks to Mr Jirasek, Miss Madsen and Mr Ryan for coaching our teams.

Our swimmers also participated in the first invitational swim meet of the season against BBC with some strong performances in the pool.

CO-CURRICULAR MUSIC

Summer Music Concert

When the concert moved inside for the formal part of the evening, our Junior Guitars opened proceedings with an entertaining set of rock classics, before our Concert Band and Junior Bands shared their talents and demonstrated their outstanding progress across the year. Our Percussion Ensemble B and C featured our very talented percussion students and were very popular as always. The evening concluded with an exciting performance that combined the ATC Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble with a very fitting end to the year for those ensembles.
