Coming Up Week 7

National Science Week has been a blast (literally) with interactive activities through the week sparking the imagination of students. Yesterday propane and oxygen rockets took off across the yard to the delight of the crowd. Today our Senior Science Ambassadors demonstrated service and leadership by engaging with Year 4 students in the program. The week finished with a bowl of liquid nitrogen ice cream for all the participants. A huge thank you to Ms Dominique Nielsen, Ms Kate McGee, and the Science teaching staff for hosting a fun and informative week.

Congratulations also to Gwenda Burton, Kristy Taylor and the library team for an engaging and interactive Book Week for the Junior School. From costume parades, author visits, drawing workshops and open morning for our Junior School Parents, it was a fun busy week for our Year 4, 5 and 6 students.

Welcome rains have rejuvenated parched grounds and ovals around ATC this week. Unfortunately, we have had to postpone the Junior School Interhouse Track and Field Carnival which is now scheduled for Friday 13 September. Mr Michael Stewart will share details closer to the date.

Victoria Park was the venue for the Year 11 Sociable (Semi-Formal) on Tuesday night. Wet weather didn’t dampen the spirits of the young men and women who were dressed to impress. They danced and sang the night away and enjoyed posing for group photos. The food was great and the vibe was upbeat and positive. I was pleased to see the respect and care the students showed their partners as we greeted them upon arrival. Thank you to the 20 staff who attended the event. A great night was had by all.

The Queensland Catholic Schools and Colleges Music Festival (QCMF) has commenced and continues over the weekend. It is the premier event on Queensland’s Catholic Schools and Colleges annual music calendar and is proudly hosted by Villanova College (Coorparoo). QCMF showcases the very best in music education, covering a diverse range of genres within the classical and contemporary styles. Performers range from six to eighteen years of age and participate in brass, wind, string, percussion, jazz, choral and contemporary ensembles. I look forward to heading out there myself on Saturday afternoon.

Empower Week

Next week we are engaging in a number of activities that aim to raise awareness and recognise the value of being in a diverse and inclusive environment. Celebrate the idea that people experience and interact with the world in different ways; there is no one "right" way of thinking, learning, and behaving, and differences are not viewed as deficits.

An assembly, daily homeroom activities and vision impaired basketball games during break. Empower week is one tangible way boys can understand how inclusive community is part of an Edmund Rice Liberating Education.

Next week I also look forward to Year 4 Mass and the Age Chess Age Championship which will both be held on Friday.

Formal school photo distribution

All formal school photos will be distributed to students during homeroom in Week 7– either on Wednesday 21 August or Thursday 22 August, by their Homeroom Teacher.

Please be sure to ask your son(s) for the pictures when they get home, so they don’t remain in their lockers or in their school bags where they may be damaged before making their way home.

If you have any questions or concerns with the pictures, please contact your son's Homeroom Teacher, or our School Photographer directly.

LEARNING

Science Week

Year 7 – 10 students had a blast celebrating Science Week with hands-on experiments like slime-making and a stalagmite competition. We also mesmerized everyone with the "genie in a bottle," the vibrant blue bottle experiment, and the daring flaming hands demonstration. Thanks to all who joined us in exploring the wonders of science!

Book Fair

Parents enjoyed a heart-warming morning in the Mt Sion Library exploring the collection of books and stationery at the Scholastic Book Fair. The event beautifully showcased the strong reading culture within the school, and highlighted the joy and connection that books can bring to readers of all ages. Boys proudly showed their parents the book shelves, sharing their favourite stories. With a huge selection of new titles available, the library buzzed with excitement as they discovered new books and chatted with friends. The Book Fair runs until Thursday in Mt Sion.

Maths - Mr Sep Bridge

All Year 10 Maths students are learning the evaluative nature of a problem solving and modelling tasks. With Essential Maths focusing on worldwide races, General Maths investigating the path of sugar gliders and Maths Methods are designing a bridge within the Gully to honour our new Deputy Principal, Mr Jason Sepetauc. Last week, they participated in an incursion where they collected data using inclinometers and other measuring tools. All of the Year 10 investigations encourage students to apply real-world mathematics in a tangible and exciting way.

QUIZIT

Some of our Senior School students travelled to St Aidan’s College for their annual QUIZIT fundraiser recently, with nearly 200 students raising money and awareness for ‘Share the Dignity’. This is an organization that seeks to support women who are experiencing challenging times due to homelessness and abuse. In addition to this charity work, students had fun competing in a range of activities including trivia, a battle of the bands and best dressed challenges for the theme, ‘Superheros.’

Traditionally we have faced strong opposition at this event so we were delighted to be announced as winners in 2024. Some of our Year 12 students (Dash, Lennon, Harlen, Dylan and Dan) joined forces with the St Aidan’s students to create an unbeatable dream team! Further congratulations to Noah who was awarded Best Dressed for his appearance as ‘The Joker.’ Our musicians also performed strongly and had the crowd on their feet cheering for encores. Thankyou to St Aidan’s for hosting us as we look forward to many more combined school events in the future.

FORMATION

The RYDA Road Safety Education and Rotary look to build the capacity of our provisional drivers through hands-on workshops, tailored for inexperienced drivers. Through shared story, research-driven content and delivery by professionals in the field, Year 11 students were exposed to the nuances of road safety. Thank you to RYDA and Rotary for a challenging and necessary program on Friday.
