Coming Up Week 7

CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE

We invite all students, parents and carers to attend the ATC 2024 Celebration of Excellence next Tuesday 12 November 2024. This evening is a celebration of the ATC Community and its achievements throughout the year, and we would hope that all students and families attend this significant evening to celebrate 2024 at Ambrose Treacy College. Students (and parents/carers of students) who are receiving an award will be notified shortly.

Doors will open at 5.30pm, with guests to be seated by 5.45pm.

The Summer Music Concert marked a triumphant conclusion to the 2024 cocurricular music performance calendar, showcasing the incredible talent and dedication of our musicians. Despite the stormy weather, the spirits of the audience remained high. A heartfelt congratulations to all the performers who delivered stunning performances, demonstrating remarkable growth both as individuals and as cohesive ensembles, bands, and orchestras throughout the year. Personally, being part of this vibrant cocurricular music community has brought me immense joy. The unwavering support from parents and friends has enriched the experience for everyone involved. As we look ahead to 2025, I eagerly anticipate welcoming even more students into our music program—so don’t miss out, sign up now!

Last night I attended the annual Clontarf Foundation Awards. The Foundation exists to improve the education, discipline, life skills, self-esteem and employment prospects of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men. Thirty-Five ATC students are proud members of the foundation. We enjoyed dinner with family and friends by the river before presenting a range of awards which celebrated the liberating achievements of the students. One touching moment was Year 12 graduate Trent providing a heartfelt send off for Mr Matt Warr who is leaving after nine years. As Dean of Faith and Mission Matt has been instrumental in supporting the establishment of the foundation at ATC.

Exit Stage Right!

We are thrilled to announce the generous donation of our new stage, which will be a fantastic addition to our assemblies and all college events at SFXC. This wonderful gift from the Parents and Friends Association is deeply appreciated and will enhance our gatherings, providing a professional and polished platform for our students and staff. We eagerly anticipate its arrival over the break and look forward to unveiling it at our first assembly in 2025. Thank you to the Parents and Friends Association, who worked tirelessly to raise funds and fund this project. Your dedication and support make a significant difference!

The Parents and Friends Association is calling for donations of second-hand school clothing in good condition for our highly successful pop-up second-hand uniform shop. Graduating Year 12 students are especially encouraged to drop off their uniforms at the main reception or senior reception on the morning of Thursday, 14 November, ahead of the valedictory ceremony. Donations from all year groups will be accepted until Friday, 29 November. Funds raised from the shop directly support projects that benefit our students. Your contributions make a significant difference!

Please note Celebration of Excellence Rehearsal - Monday 11 November at ATC for Award winners:

On Thursday, 14 November, the Ambrose Treacy Year 12 Valedictory events will commence with a Student & Staff Breakfast at 7.30am on the Westcourt Deck, hosted by the 2025 Student Leadership Team. Parents will arrive at SFXC at 8am, followed by a briefing led by Matt Warr. The Valedictory Assembly, presented by Conor Finn, will begin at 8.30am. After the assembly a Guard of Honour will be formed for Year 12 students. At 10am, attendees will travel to the Cathedral of St. Stephen, arriving by 10.45am for an 11am Mass conducted by Matt Warr and Fr Mark Franklin. LEARNING

Exam Timetables

Years 7-11 Term 4 Exam Schedule is now available on Student Cafe and Parent Lounge.

Year 11 students
will be on an exam block from Thursday 21 November Week 8, where they are only required to attend school for their exams. Normal classes resume for Year 11 Thursday 28 November Week 9.

Year 4 Maths

Year 4 students got creative in Maths building various 3D objects. They used marshmallows and tooth toothpicks to create cubes, rectangular prisms, square-based pyramids and more. The hardest challenge was refraining from eating the marshmallows before finishing their constructions. It was a great hands-on activity to introduce the class to 3D shapes and best prepare them for their final portfolio task.

Year 6 Science

How do you blow up a balloon without using your lungs? Learning about irreversible chemical reactions, Year Six students experienced firsthand how this can occur. During "Balloon Blowout" students completed a fair test by experimenting with a three different measurements of baking soda and observed as the balloons inflated on their own due to the release of carbon dioxide gas. This fun, hands-on activity vividly demonstrated how gas production from a chemical reaction can expand the balloon, making it a memorable way to learn chemistry concepts!

Textbook Return

Year 12 students are reminded to bring their textbook to Westcourt Library by Friday 15 November, 2024. All textbooks still outstanding by Friday 15 November will appear in your Parent Lounge account and incur a replacement cost.

Year 12 Laptop Purchase

As part of the College 1:1 Laptop Program, each student was given a College laptop at the beginning of Year 10 for the Senior School three‐year cycle. Following the conclusion of each Year 12s final exam, students will need to hand in their laptop and charger to the IT Department. It is important that Year 12 students back up any files on their laptop that they wish to keep to a USB or external hard drive. Laptops must be returned by COB Thursday 14 November 2024. After auditing the current laptops and the needs for 2025, a decision has been made to offer the 2024 Seniors the opportunity to purchase their College laptops. After consultation with our IT partners, ATC has been offered $125 for each of the devices. If a family wishes to purchase the College laptop, they will need to pay $125 via Parent Lounge, under Events and Payments. Purchase of the laptop must be completed by COB Thursday 14 November 2024 and will be returned in the same physical condition as they were handed in. The laptop can also be repaired but will incur an additional charge per the Acceptable Technology Use Policy (Students). Laptops will be available for collection from the IT Office from Monday 9 December 2024 after the laptop has been wiped and come with the default Windows 10 setup as if you purchased it from a retail store. For any enquiries, please email the IT Service Desk.

Middle School Immersion

Year 9 Student Representative Council recently travelled to Cherbourg as part of a two-day immersion. Students learned the history of the Mission and how the resilience and comradery of the men, women and children brought many tribes into one community. Council members enjoyed a powerful and moving tour of The Ration Shed including three presentations from the Mayor, a final superintendent of the settlement and a former resident. Taking advantage of the glorious weather, the boys then hiked to the top of Boat Mountain to get amazing views over the Burnett Region from Daniel’s Lookout. After an evening in Kingaroy, the home of the peanut, we shared a morning training session with the Clontarf students from Kingaroy State High School. It was wonderful to share games and stories. We then travelled back to Brisbane and served lunch to the visitors of Emmanuel City Mission a homeless shelter in West End. The students got an appreciation of the realities of homelessness and that the dignity of people must always be prioritised. It was a wonderful time to spend with the future leaders of our College.
