Coming Up Week 8

Now more than ever the reconciliation of First Nations and non-indigenous Australians is needed to build unity, harmony, and ultimately, prosperity. Polarizing debate about the recent referendum has drawn us away from recognising what is truly important in the reconciliation process. Human Dignity.

Regardless of politics as a Catholic community we work actively for reconciliation, justice, equity and healing. Our response is guided by the Gospel and the Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) Charter.

Recently, I attended an EREA conference where my perceptions of reconciliation were challenged. Often non-indigenous people expect First Nations people to move from ‘their world’ to ‘our world’ to dialogue. Part of standing in justice and solidarity for those who are marginalized is being willing to move to ‘their world’ to dialogue in order to build empathy and deeper understanding.

Secondly, non-indigenous people often consider the process of reconciliation to be ‘the work’ of First Nations people. Instead, we are all required to work on reconciliation. I shared these ideas with students at our Reconciliation Week assembly on Tuesday. They augment the College’s Reconciliation Action Plan which helps us navigate towards a just future.

Year 4 Tour with the Principal

Last week, College Principal Mr Chris Ryan welcomed the Year 4 students to the inner sanctum of the Edmund Rice Building. Mr Ryan explained the history of the College and the building itself. He also invited them into his office and meeting room to hear some exciting tales of what it takes to run ATC. The highlight though was a yummy morning tea which was waiting for them at the end of the morning.

LEARNING

Geography - Hands on Investigations in Real-World Settings
One of the first things I always explain to students when they come into my geography class is why they are learning this subject. I tell them that Geography is all about learning about the world around us; how interconnected we are as a people and as a planet; and most of all how important it is that we understand this connection to ensure we have a place worth living on, into the future. CLICK HERE to read this week's Blog from Anne Connolly, Head of Humanities.

From captivating and colourful butterfly art and Scratch projects to convict research and rhythmic snapshots from Music, students' work was met with well-deserved admiration and praise.

We ask students to bring a gold coin donation and you can wear your team colour to school for the day. Show your support and raise funds for Brain Cancer Research.

Senior School House Masses

It has been wonderful to celebrate our Senior School House Masses over the past few weeks. Gathering in the Chapel, each House participated reverently through scripture, prayer, reflection and song. The House Hymns initiative, which sees Houses commended for their singing, has led to a great spirit and volume in the Chapel and Father John has been just as enthusiastic in inviting the #ATCommunity to continue to #BeTheChange that our world needs each and every day.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea

The Certificate I in Hospitality students performed their assessment this week providing the ATC community with the Biggest Morning Tea. Students were happy to participate in the festivities with all proceeds donated to the Cancer Council. Students prepared every detail of the event, from the setup of the tables to the choc chips in the cookies. Congratulations to the Hospitality students and staff for the successful event and well done to the ATC community for supporting the event again in 2024.

Football 1st XI Football vs Year 5 Football Teams

In their most gruelling session of the football season, our 1st XI football team was joined by players from the 5A, 5B and 5C teams for their Tuesday morning training this week. The 1sts facilitated drills and exercises which prompted smiles, laughter and competitiveness. Could the Year 5s score past Jack, our 1st XI Goalkeeper? Could the juniors dribble past Taj, our 1st XI centre back? Could any Year 5 boys stop the dazzling dribbling skills of Zak, our central midfielder? The sessions finished with a game of 1st XI players versus every Year 5 footballer! The 1sts took and early lead but the 5s got their equaliser in the dying seconds of the game. A wonderful initiative of positive leadership, school spirit and healthy physical activity.

Year 4 Legends Rugby

This term our youngest Irish Warriors were back out on the field for our Year 4 Legends Program. This term Rugby Union was one of our focus sports. The students well and truly embraced all elements of the game played in heaven! Our littlest warriors worked on their passing, running, stepping, tacking, rucking and everything in between. Our coaches could often be heard saying “the more you smile, the better you play”. Our warriors certainly embraced this saying, as smiles and good play were evident everywhere you looked. It was great to have 2021 Past Student, Will B, running the sessions each week, sharing his knowledge and expertise with our next generation of ATC Rugby players each week.

Year 4 Legends Football

Our Year 4 little legends Football program concluded this week with some tightly fought House games. The Giants from Leinster came out on top after 2 wins and a draw. The 5 week program has seen students participate in a range of drills focusing on dribbling, shooting, passing and game awareness. Smiles and teamwork are always at the forefront of exercises which are suited for beginners and experienced players alike. It was great to have past students Aarav Chandra and Zac Allan involved as they bring so much passion and energy into Monday mornings as well.

Rugby Night Out

What a great night at Suncorp on Saturday when the ATC P&F hosted the annual Rugby Night Out to see the @Queensland Reds take on the Western Force. The east coast prevailed, and the win made it an even better night of friendraising and fun. Our Taiko Drummers played their hearts out for the final homegame and were kept very busy as the Reds ran in 9 tries in the 59 to 13 victory. We welcomed a guest drummer 'Rusty' the koala who stole the show! Thankyou to Mr Matt Butcher for coordinating the event and to everyone who came along to cheer.
