NAPLAN
On Wednesday students in Year Five, Year Seven and Year Nine commenced NAPLAN testing. Testing concludes next Wednesday, 20 March. There will be catch up sessions organized for students who are absent.
Thank you to Middle School Assistant Dean of Learning Ms Meg Ellis for leading the process. She has been ably supported by the Learning Office, the IT team who provided technical support, the Inclusive Practice team, and the teachers and school officers who’ve invigilated the testing. A big thank you must go to the students for the way in which they’ve strived to be their best. The testing sessions I visited exemplified this fact. Exams and Assessments
Examinations and end of term assessment are the foci next week. The simple messages about being prepared and being organised delivered by Senior students at assembly should be top of mind heading into this weekend.
One practical step students can take to get organised is logging into Student Café to review their exam and assessment timetables. This can be found in the School Links drop down menu. The assessment policy (including information about examinations p16) can also be located here. Parent Lounge also contains the information.
A simple tip for preparation is to plan out study time next week. It’s not too late. Use this handy planner from the Elevate Education. Study Timetable | Elevate Education I wish all students the very best in their studies and thank the Learning Office for their leadership of this busy period in the academic calendar.
Student voice was loud and clear at last week’s assembly. I would personally like to congratulate the following students for engaging the school community across a range of topics.
As an EREA school we are committed to providing a Liberating Education. Giving students opportunities to have voice and agency, such as presenting to their peers is just one way we see Liberating Practice in action at ATC. Find out more by visiting: Learning Statement - Edmund Rice Education Australia (erea.edu.au)
Music
I also take the opportunity to congratulate Ethan Nguyen (SHEP Saxophone) and Ethan Postle (AHEP Voice) who received recognition for their excellence in music. In partnership with schools across Queensland, SHEP connects the finest young musicians with a team of eminent international and national conductors in pursuit of musical excellence. AHEP is a national extension of this program.
GBC Swimming
On Tuesday March 12 our Swimming team competed with Brigidine College in the GBC Swimming Carnival at the Centenary Pool in Spring Hill. The team performed very well and ATC was awarded age champions in the 11, 12, 14, 16 and Open Boys year groups. Overall ATC/Brigidine finished in second place behind Sheldon College. Congratulations to all the members of our team and to Mr Paul Jones our Head of Aquatics for a great swimming season.

FORMATION NEWS
Student Representative Council
Last Friday we had the opportunity to acknowledge and congratulate the new Student Representative Council (SRC) members at College Assembly. Leadership is present in many forms and the ability to lead by example, supports our 2024 Senior Theme – BE THE CHANGE. Be the Change you want to see. Show Up – Represent - No Excuses. The College Leaders (both SRC and Seniors) collaboratively agree that a community that is unified and hardwired with the courage to challenge behaviours amongst their peers and represent the change in their day-to-day interactions with others, will set the example for others and build a stronger ATC. The opportunity to build leadership capacity amongst our students was further developed at the Student Leadership afternoon on the same day. Everyone has the ability to lead. It is simply - an active and intentional choice that someone makes in order to leave a person, situation or community in a better place than they found it.
Feel Good Friday
Feel Good Friday is always fun in Junior School with one of the highlights the friendly handball competitions between our Year 4 and Year 12 students. Our seniors love to share some time with our younger students sharing their beats, having a chat and building relationships.

Outstanding Musicians
We were thrilled to acknowledged two of our outstanding musos at Assembly this week. Our two Ethans represented the College last year for the State and Australian Honours Ensemble programs that were held at the Conservatorium of Music. Ethan N attended rehearsals and workshops with internationally renowned music educators and performed on the Saxophone with the State Honours program, while Ethan P successfully auditioned for and performed at the highest possible level as part of the Australian Honours Program Choir. Congratulations on this outstanding achievement Ethan and Ethan.
Guitar
After only six rehearsals, ATC Guitars are right back into it with a fine performance last week of "The Hunt", originally a solo acoustic song composed by Tommy Emmanuel (arguably, the greatest acoustic guitarist in the world) now re-arranged by their director Mr Carpenter for multiple guitars. Keep up the hard work boys!
Singing Lessons
Singing is a fantastic life skill to have; it boosts self-confidence and self-awareness and is great fun! Mrs Ohtomo works with students from all year levels and is an experienced professional vocalist. Meet Mason who is new to ATC this year and has enthusiastically joined in all things Music! He loves his weekly vocal lessons with Mrs Ohtomo as they work on repertoire that he not only enjoys but which has been chosen as suitable for his vocal range and voice type. He has also commenced Trombone lessons with the Junior Band and is looking forward to their first performance at the Autumn Music Concert on Wednesday 27 March. If your child is interested in singing for pleasure or to further enhance their skills, please contact music@atc.qld.edu.au for more information about lessons.
SPORT
AFL
Our AFL Firsts had a tough game against Padua last week. Some solid performances from team members and Mr Keys has made mention of his Best Players, Aiden B who played across half back and read the play well and rebounded with clean skills he also snuck forward and kicked a goal after starting with the ball in the backline. Joseph D with the ball coming down to the backline with regular consistency, continually outmuscled his opponent, won the ball and repeatedly launched the ball back in ATC direction. He had an outstanding game. Brady H played the majority of the game in the midfield and never stopped trying. With his pace and skill, Brady continually put the opposition under pressure with his attack on the man and the ball. Sam N played in the unfamiliar role down back and stood up in an undermanned defence. Declan our College Captain has put a call out to supporters for the AFL Firsts final game tonight at 5pm taking on Villa at Yeronga!
Cricket
Facing St Patrick's College last weekend, our ATC First XI continued their unbeaten streak with a convincing victory and some great performances from all players. With our final fixtures on Saturday, the Year 12 boys will be looking to finish of their school cricket careers on a high against Marist College Ashgrove. We wish all boys the best of luck for their final game in the Blue White Green
Kayaking Representative Sport
Full speed is his modus operandi and Tom Messenger kept up the pace at the Australian Kayak Championships being named the U16 fastest 200 metre sprint paddler in Australia. This achievement has earned him a spot in the Australian Team for the Asia Pacific Champs in May! Tom also received 4 Bronze medals for 500m and 1000m events in the single and four man boats. Well done Tom and we look forward to hearing news in May.
AFL - Met West
Bailey R, Kyan S and Xander B (Year 9), along with Year 10 players Bailey R and Liam M all made the 13-15 Years Met West AFL squad. They will travel to Cairns for the QSS State Champs in May! Well done on your selection and good luck at the upcoming competition.

Film and Media
With the Academy Awards on Monday night it was cool to see these students enjoying being both behind and in front of the lenses in our Film and Media Club. They have been busy this term recording a Vox Pop Style interviews for our upcoming TV show we are striving to produce. Students were using bluetooth mics and Canon m50 camera and manfrotto tripods. Even the best directors like Christopher Nolan started somewhere.
We will see you next week in Week 9.
