It's Music to Our Ears

It was tremendous to visit various performances over the past few days at the QCMF held at Villanova College. Our Music Program and staff are outstanding, and it is so very pleasing to see all our musicians from the Junior School through to the Senior School enjoying themselves, improving and excelling. I extend my hearty congratulations to all students, parents and caregivers and staff for a wonderful weekend of teamwork, friendship, and focus. Congratulations to our team of staff so ably led by Mr Jonathon Bolt. There were some very long days over the course of the program and our staff do it with a smile, wise patience, and good humour. Thank you to all the parents and caregivers for supporting the student musicians to attend practices and rehearsals over an extended time to build to this event and our Formal Music Concert being held on Friday 1 September. Finally, and importantly, well done and congratulations to our Year 12 students, some of them having participated in our Music Program since Year 4. Their dedication and example is prized by the College.

Year 12

The 2023 Year 12 group is special as they are the first generation of ATC students to go through ATC from Year 4 to Year 12 - the original batch or the 'OG Squad'. This Thursday marks 50 days of school remaining for them, and we will signpost this time with the group with a special morning tea around the statue of Blessed Edmund Rice in front of the Edmund Rice Building. This is a place of special meaning for lots of reasons and is the place in which they will spend their final moments on the campus together in ritual after their external exams on Valedictory Day, 16 November. They now enter an important time of Mock Exams, and we wish these young people every success, health, and happiness as we walk this time together.

Dean of Learning

Ms Lara Morgan, Dean of Learning, has been appointed to the position of Deputy Principal-Studies at St Rita’s College, Clayfield, commencing in January 2024. We warmly congratulate Lara on her appointment. 2023 sees Lara complete her fifth year at ATC and fourth on the College Leadership Team. Through a turbulent period of COVID, Lara has been a both a stabilising influence and a driver of improvement, growth, and consolidation in the evolution of our teaching and learning practices and policies.

Lara’s achievements in developing our pedagogical framework, whole school approach to inclusion, systems, and processes to support the introduction of the new Senior Schooling model, focus on literacy skills across the curriculum, expansion of vocational education pathways and integration of information technology platforms to support teaching and learning have been exemplary. Her intellect, professionalism, dedication, and commitment have been gifts to the College at a crucial time in our continuing development and growth. We wish Lara every success in her role at St Rita’s and thank and congratulate her for her service to Ambrose Treacy College. Recruitment for this key College Leadership Team position will commence in the very near future.

Ms Debbie Shalders

Ms Shalders, a member of our Junior School teaching team for the past 16 years, has been appointed as a member of the inaugural Year 5 and 6 teaching team at our sister school, Brigidine College commencing in 2024. This is exciting news for Ms Shalders and while she will be missed at ATC, we are very happy for her on this new adventure. Ms Shalders will continue with us as a proud ATC parent, and she will always be fondly remembered as a great teacher and the strong and compassionate mum to Cooper who is the inspiration for our Beanies for Brain Cancer Day when State of Origin commences each year. We congratulate Ms Shalders and thank her for a long and wonderful contribution to Nudgee Junior and Ambrose Treacy College.

Empower Week

2023 is the second year of our Empower Week initiative. Earlier this year we enjoyed a week that focussed on neurodiversity and inclusion. This week, we are celebrating Empower Week with a focus on the issue of racism and the theme of diversity. At the whole school assembly, our focus will be on the theme of racism and how the language we use both intentionally and unintentionally can have a harmful impact. We look forward to a panel discussion about this important issue and how we can all play an important role in protecting our community from racism and promote a positive culture. In the Senior School later in the week, there will also be a focus which follows up and consolidates our exploration of the theme of diversity in 2022. Wear It Purple Day is Friday 25 August and is celebrated across Australia to foster a supportive, safe, inclusive, and empowering environment for Australia’s LGBTQIA+ youth.

Study Tips

It was pleasing to spend some time with both the Year 11 and Year 12 groups last Friday with some key staff as we prepare for upcoming assessment and for the Year 12s, Mock Exams that are a key preparation for their External Exams in Term 4. Please find below some key advice shared with them that is useful for all students during this busy final month of Term 3:

As the assessment period approaches, parents may wish to reinforce these at home:

  • Remove distractions: switch off mobile phones, find a quiet space and close unnecessary apps on your tablet.
  • Make a schedule: make a list of things to be done and in the right order - tick off items when you have done them showing what is left to do. Prioritising is key!
  • Think positively – make small goals and reward yourself with exercise or a small, delicious treat!
  • Maintain healthy sleep habits – a well-rested brain and body help us to consolidate newly acquired information.
  • Chunk your study into 30-minute intervals with a 10-minute break in between. By having a short break, you allow your brain to relax before focusing again.

Community Prayers

I ask the community to please keep Nicholas Nielsen (Year 9) and his family in your thoughts and prayers after the recent passing of his grandfather. Lord, we pray for those in our community who are suffering. Be with them in this time of hardship and uncertainty. Give comfort and peace to those who have lost loved ones. May their sorrow be turned into strength, and their distress turned into peace. May our hearts remain loving and pure as we seek to always be compassionate to those around us.

God bless.

Chris Ryan
