Remembering Those Who Gave us Freedom

ANZAC Day is one of the most sacred days in Australia each year. Citizens of all ages and backgrounds come together to remember and celebrate the bravery and sacrifice of the armed services. The powerful legacy created in Turkey on 25 April 1914 was remembered at the College this morning. Through poignant reflections from Colonel Mark Smith, Deputy Commander of 11 Brigade Gallipoli Barracks, students were able to connect the lessons of the past to own our world in 2024. We pray that the extraordinary deeds of all service men and women in Australia is always acknowledged and respected.

Ambrose Treacy College honours those who have served, and those who continue to serve. Our ANZAC liturgies were held in a solemn and special place on the river, as students and staff gathered in respect and gratitude.

History informs us that the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) fought its first campaign on the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915. The anniversary of the AIF’s introduction to battle, on 25 April that year, was commemorated through the war years, and in every year since. Anzac Day, Australia’s National Day of Commemoration acknowledges the sacrifice of more than 300,000 Australians that served overseas during the First World War, of whom 60,000 lost their lives - more than in any conflict before or since. Our community acknowledges the many families with serving members of the Australian Defence Force and their continued presence to proudly serve.

During the ANZAC Commemoration Ceremony, our Year 10 students Leo and Josh laid a wreath on behalf of the ATC community at the Shrine of Remembrance. Over 3000 students represented schools from all over South East QLD and commemorated the sacrifices of so many Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women. On ANZAC Day please pause to acknowledge the men and women of the armed forces.

On ANZAC Day, many ATC students and their families demonstrated their respect at local Anzac Day marches and commemorative services in suburbs around Brisbane. Students donned their formal uniform and marched proudly alongside other local schools and community groups, standing together solemnly as they were reminded of the selfless acts of the men and women who have fought for peace and freedom for our great nation.

Lest we forget.
