Support and Compassion in Challenging Times

Online Awareness

The tragic events unfolding in Israel and Gaza are deeply concerning and confronting. We pray for all people and families for safety and safe passage at this dreadful time.

The ESafety Commissioner had raised their concern with schools about the proliferation of information and imagery online depicting aspects of the horrors of this situation. Please be aware that social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, Threads and Tik-Tok among others are places where children and young adults may be exposed to “news” and imagery which may be shocking, upsetting, or confusing.

The ESafety Commission recommends avoiding raising the issue with students explicitly unless it is apparent that they are already aware of it or have been exposed to it. Drawing students’ attention to the content may cause unnecessary worry or distress and increase exposure due to curiosity. However, engaging with young people who are impacted is vital and we will assist with this as required.

Please feel welcome to contact our Counselling Team with any concerns or to refer to the eSafety website HERE.

Staff News

Congratulations to Mr Paul Degenkamp and Ms Maryanne Gillespie who have been appointed as Junior School Year Level Coordinators commencing in 2024. These roles became available as Mr Cameron Pickering has resigned his position to lead our Clontarf Academy as Director and Mr Lawrie Gordon steps away to continue as a full time classroom teacher. I take this opportunity to thank and congratulate Cam and Lawrie as we are blessed to continue to have these two fine educators and people with us.

Congratulations to Ms Deb Carcary, our College Accountant, who has been selected by EREA Colleges to act as our Business Manager from mid-December to mid-June while Mr Peter Nugent is on long service leave. Congratulations also to Ms Aurora Pei, our Payroll Officer who has been promoted for this time to College Accountant. We are currently recruiting for a contract Payroll Officer.

Congratulations to Mr Patrick Behan, our E Learning Co-ordinator, who has been appointed to a position with Education Perfect, an Educational Services company. Patrick will commence this position in late November. I thank him for his outstanding service to ATC since our foundation year as teacher, middle leader, colleague and friend.

I was delighted to recently receive formal notification from the Queensland Catholic Education Commission that Nicole Kirsch, our Middle School Mathematics Co-ordinator and Senior Maths Teacher has been formally certified as a Highly Accomplished Teacher.

Certification is a rigorous process, and the assessment of teaching practice has been made against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) in two stages of assessment. It has included a portfolio compilation demonstrating outstanding practice across the seven standards of the APST and all 37 descriptors. Observations of practice, referee statements and discussions with referees and the Principal during virtual visits have also been completed. I warmly congratulate Nicole as indeed she is a wonderful teacher.

Arts Week

It was simply great to see so many parents and family members able to enjoy our Visual Art, Drama, Media Art, and Music with our students last week. We greatly look forward to our Actor’s Studio presentation of Lord of the Flies on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings this week. Congratulations to everyone involved, especially our talented students, supportive parents, and dedicated staff. Special thanks and congratulations go to our Year 12 students. Their gifts will be missed in our Arts programs, and we thank them for their legacy. In a special way, I congratulate our Cultural Captains, Alexander, Tristan and Ryan who have done a fabulous job throughout the year.

Jazz by the River

Congratulations to everyone involved in the planning, organisation, and facilitation of the 2023 Jazz by the River which was a huge success. Congratulations to the organising committee and all staff who led our students and came to support.

Thank you and congratulations to the Bakehouse Team, Hospitality students and staff for a wonderful job and to the Property Team who worked tirelessly all week and were literally everywhere!

We are so very proud of all students involved in this special event along with all of the events of Arts Week. Thank you to everyone for your support.

Parents and Friends and Pink Day

It was great that all of the ATC mothers and caregivers who went along to the Spring Lunch on Friday had a great time. Thank you to Prue Moloney and all who supported this annual P&F Event.  Our annual Pink Day was another success with students and staff actively supporting awareness and fund raising for research into Breast Cancer therapies.

Year 12 Students

Our Year 12 students conclude classes this Wednesday. Over the next 3 days there is a balance of fun, ritual and final subject reviews before they commence their study and external exams period. We wish them all the very best.

Thank you to all families who have donated gifts for our Year 12 students as they finish classes this week. The messages of inspiration and mementos are greatly appreciated by the Year 12 fellows as they are encouraged and supported by the younger students and our extended community. Thank you to the ATC P&F for this initiative and for all parental support. Today Year 4 gave each Senior student a pair of funky socks and a message of good luck to take home and display in their study area.

Community Prayers

Lord, we pray for those in our community who are suffering. Be with them in this time of hardship and uncertainty. Give comfort and peace to those who have lost loved ones. May their sorrow be turned into strength, and their distress turned into peace. May our hearts remain loving and pure as we seek to always be compassionate to those around us.

God bless,

Chris Ryan
